Summary
The London Borough of Merton (LBM) is a London Council in southwest London, England, with a population of 206,000 residents. Known for its blend of urban and suburban areas, Merton encompasses Wimbledon, Mitcham, and Morden. The borough provides essential services such as housing, education, and waste management, and is home to the world-famous Wimbledon Tennis Championships and several green spaces.
The Challenges
The London Borough of Merton faced several critical challenges:
- Aging Infrastructure
- Cost Pressures
- Cloud Transition Issues
- Time Sensitivity
The Solution
Step 1: Assessment We conducted two comprehensive assessments to evaluate LBM’s existing infrastructure:
Cloud Discovery Assessment and Optimisation and Licensing Assessment.
Step 2: MAP Funding
As an AWS Migration Acceleration Program (MAP) Partner, Digital Space leveraged MAP funding to support LBM’s migration project. This then enabled us to provide a fixed-cost migration, alleviating budget concerns.
Step 3: Business Case Development
With the need for urgency, we collaborated closely with LBM’s team to build a compelling business case. This ensured alignment with their strategic goals and paved the way for a successful migration.
Step 4: Migration Within just three months, Digital Space:
- Migrated approximately 127 servers, 53 applications and 75TB of data.
- Transitioned critical applications (including Library systems, Microsoft and Linux-based workloads) to the cloud.
- Secured and transferred all necessary data to AWS.
Step 5: FinOps Review
Following the migration, we conducted regular detailed FinOps reviews to optimise cloud spending and ensure costs remain under control.
The Results
The London Borough of Merton achieved transformative outcomes through the migration project:
- Rapid Migration: Completed migrating from on-premises infrastructure to the cloud within three months.
- Cost Efficiency: Turned off legacy infrastructure, reducing operational costs.
- Improved Visibility: Gained a clearer understanding of their IT environment, enhancing resilience and security.
- Enhanced Services: Ensured key applications were modernised and operational in the cloud.
