Who is the MedicAlert?
MedicAlert is the UK’s most trusted and recognised medical ID service provider, operating as a charity to support individuals with medical conditions, allergies, and other specific health needs. Since 1964, MedicAlert has provided peace of mind through its membership service and custom-made medical ID products—ensuring members can be safely and accurately represented in emergencies when they are unable to speak for themselves.
The Challenges
MedicAlert faced two key challenges with its cloud environment:
- Excessive on-demand monthly spend
- Unnecessary or wasted expenditure
These issues had led to higher-than-expected costs and prompted a need for strategic cost optimisation.
The Solution
As part of an ongoing resale agreement, Digital Space’s FinOps team conducted a comprehensive cloud cost review to uncover and address areas of inefficiency.
Step 1: Initial Assessment
During early engagement, we discovered that MedicAlert had enabled GenAI insight tools to explore its enhanced capabilities. However, the feature delivered limited insight relative to its cost. Disabling this option resulted in a 12% reduction in daily spending.
Step 2: Commitment Optimisation
A deeper review of commitment-based resources, such as EC2 and RDS instances, revealed opportunities to utilise no upfront reserved instances. Implementing these changes led to an additional 7% saving on daily spend.
Step 3: Advanced Cost Analysis
By combining AWS Cost Explorer, robust tagging policies, and our in-depth understanding of MedicAlert’s evolving cloud environment, we identified further inefficiencies. These insights enabled a 21% reduction in daily spend through smarter resource allocation and usage.
The Results
Through a targeted FinOps review, Digital Space delivered a total 38% reduction in daily cloud spend – without requiring any upfront financial commitment from MedicAlert (see table above).
